Dear Rip Van Winkle Scouting Community,
We hope this letter finds you well. This is an official notice of a Special Meeting of the Rip Van Winkle Council (RVWC) on Thursday March 13th, 2025 at 7 PM via Zoom. The purpose of this meeting will be to discuss a potential merger with the Twin Rivers Council.
In June 2024, the Rip Van Winkle Key 3 received notification from Scouting America’s National Leadership that we were being placed on a transitional charter and needed to join another Council. With the decision, the Executive Board formed a transition committee to look at our three potential merger options which included Twin Rivers Council, as well as Leatherstocking, and Greater Hudson Valley. We evaluated items such as Council governance, fiscal stewardship, economic conditions, population demographics, program offerings, and culture. At the completion of that process we, the RVWC Leadership, notified Twin Rivers Council (TRC) that they were the preferred merger choice.
After receiving that notice, the TRC leadership formed reciprocal merger study committees and on February 13th, 2025, the Executive Board of the Twin Rivers Council voted to recommend the merger be sent to the full Council for approval.
The RVWC Key 3 believes there are many strengths the TRC community would bring to us including strong additional programs available to our youth. Should a merger vote be successful, the Rip Van Winkle Council becomes the Rip Van Winkle District, and the Twin Rivers Council will expand by two counties. The combination of resources would help Scouting in all fifteen counties.
This merger cannot be a success without the full participation of both communities. We understand you may have questions, and we want to hear from you! On Thursday March 13th at 7 PM, there will be a Town Hall with the Interim Scout Executive, Council President and Council Commissioner to provide additional information and address concerns or comments you may have. The link to the Zoom meeting is included with this invitation.
